The Board of Health of a general health district is required to abate and remove all nuisances within its jurisdiction. A public health nuisance is a nuisance that can impact the community by promoting the spread of disease. The Board of Health has the authority to require owners of property to abate and remove public health nuisances to protect the community from disease transmission.

Examples of public health nuisances are:
- Garbage piled outside or animal waste – this promotes a living space and feeding source for animals that can carry diseases that may be transmissible to humans.
- Stagnant water in a swimming pool that is no longer used or unrimmed tires – this promotes a breeding area for mosquitoes that can carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
- Rodent and pest infestation – some rodents and pests can transmit diseases to humans and proper pest management is required to treat an infestation.
- Sewage - raw sewage contains dangerious viruses and bacteria that can cause a number of diseases and health issues.

- Mold
- Unsecured Structures
- Construction and Demolition Debris
- Bedbugs
- Weeds/Tall Grass
- Junk Vehicles
- Agricultural Pollution Abatement and Improper Pesticide Use
