Carroll County has many food service operations (FSO) and retail food establishments (RFE). It is the Carroll County General Health District’s (CCGHD) responsibility to ensure these facilities are inspected thoroughly to ensure they are handling food safely and are in compliance with the Ohio Uniform Food Safety Code. The ultimate goal is to prevent food-borne illness among consumers.
A FSO is a location where food is intended to be served in individual portions and is prepared or served for a charge or required donation.
- An example of a FSO in Carrollton would be a restaurant such as, The Chop House.
A RFE is a location where food is stored, processed, prepared, manufactured, or otherwise held or handled for retail sale.
- An example of a RFE in Carrollton would be a grocery store such as, Sanders.
The state agency who oversees the inspections conducted by the Carroll County General Health District of FSOs and RFEs is the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Agriculture, respectively.
The CCGHD also inspects food facilities that are called mobiles and temporaries, and these can either be a FSO or RFE depending on how and what they are selling.
A mobile food facility is operated from a movable vehicle, portable structure, or watercraft and routinely changes location. An example of this would be a food truck observed at festivals and fairs.
A temporary food facility is operated at an event for no more than five consecutive days. An example of this would be a tent set up selling sandwiches for an event lasting two days.
